Once launched, The INDI Fund will be the firts private equity model that grants local communities an equity stake in the projects in exchange for the contribution of their land and/or natural resources. This allows community members – who typically are among Latin America’s poorest populations – to share in the financial benefits of the investment and a voice in the decision making process and operation of the project. Additionally, InTrust develops individual projects (besides from the INDI Fund),that align with InTrust’s mission.
We recognize developing energy, agribusiness and infrastructure projects is a delicate process for stake holders and local residents, so we engage community members in a fair and open manner from the earlieststages of planning .
The communities also benefit from local economic growth that the projects have kick started.
The projects will generate financial gains for the community through our unique equity-sharing model.
The projects will also create local jobs, for which the fund will provide training for local community members.
The economic growth and development aims to reduce the economic need for migration, which in turn will protect indigenous culture and community customs.
Both, InTrust and the INDI Fund Puts Partnerships into Practice:
Carefully screening projects, including site visits, to ensure the local community would welcome the potential project.
Avoiding dispossession of indigenous peoples’ lands.
Including the community in negotiations of critical issues.
Creating a project management model that is specific to each communities’ needs, and building skills for the stakeholders to ensure the model is implemented successfully.
Requiring that a community representative serves on the board of each project, that he or she is given full access to all information available to the project’s board, and that their vote is taken in consideration prior to the sale of the project or change of operator.
Hiring indigenous and community members as a majority of the workers involved in the project, and if possible, a majority of them.
Using available resources, such as electricity, to help the community.
